President Obama today will commit the government to nearly doubling the amount of available wireless spectrum. Demand is growing for high-speed video and data transmission.
From the Wall Street Journal:
The move is aimed at fostering investment and economic growth and creating jobs as information flowing over wireless networks continues to grow at a rapid pace.
“If effectively implemented, the plan would raise significant revenue that would support public safety, additional job-creating infrastructure investments and deficit reduction,” an administration official said.
The White House says it will auction off more wireless space and spend that money on public safety, infrastructure and deficit reduction.
