This according to the Chinese news site Digi Times, which cites sources at Foxconn. They say that Foxconn has been told to start shipping within the next 100 days and the initial order is for 400,000 to 600,000 units. The article says these devices will come from the plants in Shenzhen, China, which have seen quite a lot of turmoil this year – a number of suicides and suicide attempts. If this is true, it could come off as awfully cynical of Apple. Coming out of a holiday season where the iPad 1 is going to be appearing under an awful lot of trees, they’ll evidently roll out a replacement almost right away. The one new spec I’ve heard about this is the front and rear facing camera to facilitate FaceTime, the video chat feature. Of course, if all this means I can get an iPad 1 for a hundred bucks, that might not be so bad.
