The Atlantic survived by trying to destroy itself

John Moe Dec 13, 2010

Really interesting read in the New York Times about how The Atlantic managed to reinvent itself and turn a profit of 1.8 million dollars, the first time in at least a decade they haven’t lost money. They approached their business as if they were a new startup whose only ambition was to destroy The Atlantic. They hired top notch bloggers, they took down the paywall, they reduced the differentiation between online staff and print staff, and sales people were given the same commission if they sold for print or web. And they started hosting a lot of live events.
