Researchers have taken a data mining dive into a 2008 survey and come up with some pretty remarkable results. The 2008 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts defined participation in a pretty traditional way: going to the opera, hearing a jazz concert, hitting a museum. Stuff that you think of as The Arts. That survey found that about 1 in 4 Americans participate in The Arts. But when new researchers expanded the definition to include digital arts, stuff you do online, art that recognizes an electronic component, the number tripled and came out to 3 in 4 Americans. The new analysis indicates a strong link between people who create art and those who attend art events as well as a strong link between early arts education and adult arts participation.
