The outlook for housing remains dreary. Damage estimates are rising for the floods now reaching Memphis, and it’s not clear who will be paying. That argument is going on in Japan as well, over who should pay for the mess at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, and the disruption caused by radiation leaks from the plant. Facing budget cuts, California and other states are considering letting their most selective research universities set their own, higher tuitions. In New Hampshire, the House has voted to cut $650 million from the budget and one senator is trying to balance competing needs and priorities. Apple tops the list for brand value, beating Google and McDonald’s, among others.
