Not something that I love talking about because it seems so crass but the explosion at Foxconn’s Chengdu factory in China looks to have a big impact on iPads. The accident seems to have been traced to combustible dust in a polishing room at the facility. Chengdu is a pretty new facility but is said to be one of only two that were making iPads, the other being the much larger facility in Shenzen (where most of last year’s suicides took place). Now Chengdu is closing for new safety measures and it’s likely that iPad 2s will be more scarce. The closing will also have an effect on products from HP and other companies.
