For Marketplace, Friday, June 3, 2011
Happy Friday. Unfortunately, the jobs report released by the Labor Department this morning isn’t giving us much to smile about it. Reporter Mitchell Hartman has a story about the surge in long-term unemployment. And we have more analysis of what’s going on with the stalled economic recovery in our Weekly Wrap.
Speaking of unhappy, Sony is probably not too jolly right about now. We look at how the company is responding to repeated hacks — and how its approach differs from Microsoft. In other tech news, have you heard of eye-tracking? It’s a way to study what consumers actually look at when they see ads or packaging on store shelves. And reporter Christopher Werth takes a look at it.
In car news, the Treasury Department has agreed to sell its stake in Chrysler, giving Fiat majority control. We’ve got another round of “Small talk” for you, from the guys who bring you the Dinner Party Download. And finally, comedian Albert Brooks discusses his new novel, 2030, and his somber vision of America’s future. Have a great weekend. Here are the songs we played on today’s show:
- Funk Bomb — Alfred “Pee Wee” EllisBuy
- Raspberry Beret — PrinceBuy
- I Mean Business — Diamond DistrictBuy
- What Have We Done? — The MotetBuy
