New Gmail starts showing up

John Moe Nov 2, 2011

Google has been on a redesign jag lately. Reader got an overhaul and now the new Gmail is starting to roll out. This is going to make a much bigger splash since a ton more people use Gmail. The design is simpler, which means more white space, which means fewer messages being displayed at once. There are photo icons of the people sending the message (provided it’s from an account like, oh, Gmail) and the conversations thread in a much more elegant way so it’s not just email after email piled on top of each other. Some people will hate it, sure, but there are a lot of customizable options here too to make the thing look the way you want it to. Actually, this will be an interesting litmus test to see how people respond to an adaptable redesign since the only thing you can ever count on in a redesign is users screaming in anger and demanding that it be returned to how it was.
