In the 1958 schlock horror movie “The Blob”, the titular menace oozes all over town consuming people and objects, growing larger and more menacing with each absorption. Sometimes I think of this movie when I hear news about Google getting into travel listings or social media or coupons – just rolling through the web, sucking up all in its path.
For instance, I used to look at newspaper websites to get the latest results in elections. Sometimes if it’s a real nail biter, I’d even go to the official government site to get the returns there, only to find that it had been overrun with traffic and was crashing. BUT! Now Google has teamed up with the Republican party in Iowa to post results of tonight’s caucuses at a special site.
That’s not all, says Hillicon Valley:
Google is increasing its election year presence, including sponsoring a media center in Des Moines for reporters covering the caucuses. The “Google Hangout” area within the media filing center has food from local restaurants and a media stand-up area to shoot interviews, according to a release from the company.
