Today, concerned consumers plan to deliver petitions to Apple Stores around the globe, calling for Apple to “overhaul the way its suppliers treat their workers.” They’ve reportedly got 250,000 signatures. The concerns encompass child labor, exposure to neurotoxic chemicals, all the usual nastiness that can come with overseas production.Marketplace has been following the conditions reported in some of Apple’s Chinese facilities.
Apple basically says it shares the petitioners concerns… but doesn’t really find them valid, since it quickly addresses any problems the company finds. Can protests like this really make a dent? More specifically, you have to wonder how many of those who signed these online petitions did so… on an iPhone.
