UCLA professor, Judea Pearl is a really smart guy, and now he’s got a Turing Award to prove it.
Pearl’s research in artificial intelligence earned him the the prestigious Turing Award, which was announced yesterday.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the dominant approach to artificial intelligence was to try to capture the process of human judgment in rules a computer could use. They were called rules-based expert systems.”
Dr. Pearl championed a different approach of letting computers calculate probable outcomes and answers. It helped shift the pursuit of artificial intelligence onto more favorable terrain for computing.
It’s because of Pearl’s research that we have things like intuitive searching on sites like Google and Bing, not to mention Watson, the I.B.M. super computer that took top honors on Jeopardy.
Before we go looking up your March Madness bracket selections or how to make the perfect gazpacho, why don’t we take a second to say “thanks” to Judea Pearl.
Thanks Doc!
