Congratulations India! You just won the Country That Sends the Most Spam award.

U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-whaaaat? Just when we thought we had the gold medal safely around our national neck, in swoops India to take away our claim to spam fame. Security firm Sophos released a report yesterday that shows inboxes in India are stuffed with more useless junk than ours. From the BBC: “India’s rapid rise up the chart of spam producers has been helped by the rapid growth of the web in the country, said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.” The country has seen a big rise in connectivity over the last couple years, which on one hand is great. It also means that there are lots of newbie web users out there, who haven’t been trained to don their skeptical glasses when reading email. For spammers and other lowlife, digital miscreants, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel.

But let’s focus on the real problem: what’s wrong with America? We need to fix this problem. Pronto! Maybe if everybody dusted off their junk mail folders and replied to all the messages, we could climb back to the top of the podium. You don’t even need to write anything – just hit reply, then send. Go Team USA 2012 Spam Olympics!
