Also from the WWDC, Apple announced partnerships with several car companies, which will lead to more cars letting Siri get behind the wheel (so to speak). Siri will be hitting the road in 2013 models from Audi, BMW, Chrysler, GM, Honda, Land Rover/Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. The Grey Lady reports on the disembodied voice lady: “adding Siri to the mix may accelerate two promising trends: the increasing outsourcing of nonessential car functions to the cloud and the demise of visually distracting displays.” That’s right, with Internet, phone, GPS all on your phone, there might just be less need for distracting screens to look at and evaluate while driving.
Apple says the carmakers will use an “eyes free” version of Siri, which will cut the screen while your car is on.
Siri’s responsibilities will be expanded with the launch of the Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS6. A new turn-by-turn GPS maps system will be accessible by Siri as well as posting status updates to Facebook and Twitter. So I guess that means that soon we’ll be able to rattle off 50+ point Words With Friends moves, with the top down, speeding off to work. Let’s just hope you can spell s-t-o-p before it’s too late.
