“Step away from the computer” – S.W.A.T. tech division

Marc Sanchez Jul 24, 2012

When most people know what you’re talking about when you refer to the “phantom vibrations” you feel even if you’re not carrying your phone, it might be  time to take a look at just how connected we are. Hold that thought, I need to check my News Feed… OK, I’m back. Can I tweet that first sentence?

You get the picture, and so, apparently, do a lot of Silicon Valley movers and shakers, who impose tech timeouts. Wisdom 2.0 is a conference that looks at the importance of unplugging and balancing one’s life. The New York Times writes about this year’s conference, attended by honchos from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, and eBay: “they debated whether technology firms had a responsibility to consider their collective power to lure consumers to games or activities that waste time or distract them.”
When you aren’t scanning tweets, spending way too long fiddling with Instagram filters, or obsessively refreshing your Words With Friends games to see if you play your next move, it’s easy to see how unplugging can be a positive, but wait… Q-U-I-X-O-T-I-C – triple word score! I gotta go.
