Strata watch coming, it’s a smartphone on your wrist

John Moe Jul 30, 2012

Finally, Dick Tracy will have choices. As you no doubt recall, the tough guy detective from the funny pages had a two-way wrist radio that doubled as his watch. Like all of us, of course, he’s likely adapted to the times and may have recently grabbed the Pebble watch, which was funded through Kickstarter. The Pebble is on the way and connects to an existing device through Bluetooth. Now, Kickstarter is the funding source for the Strata, which CNET notes is not a ripoff:

You may be inclined to think that the Strata is a ripoff, but there are key differences. For one, the Strata will have enhanced functionality for iOS 6, on top of iOS 5–Pebble’s CEO has not confirmed this, commenting on a forum that the company “[doesn’t] have anything to say yet, but probably more later this summer before Pebble ships”. Also, the Pebble has an e-ink display, while the Strata’s screen is an LCD.

Here’s what I find so exciting about the smartwatch (let’s start using that term) revolution: people are going to know what time it is again! No one wears watches anymore so when they need to know what time it is they have to fumble around for their phone instead of just looking at their dang wrist. Now we won’t have to! Granted, we’ll look like an updated nerd version of the old calculator watch but we’ll KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS.
