The new Facebook mobile software, Facebook “Home,” turns a smartphone’s home screen into a sort of Facebook newsfeed– the minute a user turns on their mobile device, photos and status updates will pop up. For those who don’t want to download the new software themselves, manufacturer HTC will release a phone that comes pre-loaded with Facebook “Home.”

While some are calling Facebook’s big announcement on Thursday “the fanciest screensaver anyone’s ever seen,” Farhad Manjoo at Slate Magazine thinks “Home” will work for a lot of people.

“Hundreds of millions of people around the world use Facebook as their main app,” Manjoo says. “For those people, this turns your phone into the thing that you do most with it, it sort of gives you that experience front and center.”

Manjoo adds this could be an important factor, especially if the phone is used by teens.

“There have been some fears for a while that Facebook is kind of losing the teenage audience, and so this might be a way for them to get that group back,” he says.
