Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced this week that the company plans to triple the size of its charging stations network. Some industry watchers say a lack of infrastructure is the biggest challenge to electric cars in the U.S. Will Oremus, who blogs about tech for Slate magazine, calls this the “road trip problem.”

Right now Tesla’s 8 Supercharger stations provide about 200 miles of charge in about 30 minutes. Even at that rate, drivers may find 30 minutes too long for a pit-stop. But Musk says Tesla is also working on increasing the charge rate as it grows the number of stations.

Tesla’s 8 charging stations are currently located in California and along the East Coast.

During the Summer of this year, Tesla plans to expand coverage in Califonia and the East Coast while adding charging stations in Florida, Texas, Colorado, Washington, and Illinois.
