New York City menus get salted with sodium symbols

That’s the recommended daily limit of milligrams of sodium a person should ingest. And starting Monday, New York City restaurants will be required to display a special symbol next to dishes that have more than that amount. As the Associated Press reports, it’s estimated that the new rule applies to 10 percent of items at chain restaurants with at least 15 outlets nationwide.

That’s how much Puerto Rico owes on Tuesday as part of ongoing troubles with repaying its tremendous debt. The commonwealth already defaulted on a debt payment of almost $60 million in August. Now, the government warns that making Tuesday’s deadline would mean cutting government services — a move that Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla has said he’s unwilling to make. But economists warn that missing this week’s payment could mean much more serious problems for Puerto Rico.

That’s how many cars VW will have to recall for illegal emission control software in Germany alone. As the New York Times writes, analysts have estimated that the total cost of the diesel emissions debacle could top 40 billion euros for the company.

That’s how many customers have been affected by a data hack of tech company Vtech, which makes educational software and toys. While no credit card information was stolen, the personal information and passwords of many customers was taken in the hack. And as the BBC reports, it’s particularly troubling that the names, genders, and birthdates of many children were part of the information stolen.
