Mississippi River floods could have a major impact on shipping
The new year is likely to bring a lot more extreme weather. The strong El Niño is already causing problems around the country — along the Mississippi river, intense flooding has killed at least twenty people, forced evacuations and disrupted lives and traffic on the streets and along the waterway.
Every day, thousands of barges ship oil, grain, metal, coal and other goods along the river — it’s a major path for domestic shipping and exports.
Austin Golding, the marketing manager at his family’s business, Golding Barge, joined Molly Wood to discuss the impact of the floods on businesses along the river and far beyond.
