Louis Vuitton cast Jaden Smith, Will Smith’s 17-year-old son, as the face of its latest women’s wear campaign. Fashion journalist Kate Betts explains their choice.

On androgyny in fashion:

If you look at a lot of celebrities especially, they’re all tapping into it. Thinking of Kanye West wearing skirts for example, and Laverne Cox, and all of it. But the androgyny idea is not new, certainly not in fashion. But I think every new generation has its influence on this idea.

I think the millennials, as they call them, is the sweet spot for advertising now and certainly in fashion, that’s who people are trying to appeal to. You know, I think its something that we’ve seen on runways for a few seasons now. Designers like Hedi Slimane YSL, Prada, Gucci, they’ve all been experimenting with this idea of androgyny or even gender fluidity on the runway.
