Britain’s vote to leave the European Union is already influencing stocks — European and global markets are in turmoil — and there are questions about how the United Kingdom’s departure will affect relationships and trade in Europe and the world. 

With Scotland and Ireland reeling after being out-voted by England and Wales, the ties that bind the U.K. are under strain. British Prime Minister David Cameron announced his intentions to resign, while other European leaders called for a quick departure. 

The U.K. and Europe will determine their next steps in a yearslong negotiation process. Marketplace European correspondent Stephen Beard joins Marketplace Weekend from London to discuss the Brexit’s immediate and long-term effects.
